RELEASE: Released from Torino, Italy, Embargoed until 12am, 15/01/2015
15-year old Tasmanian school boy Alex Peroni is today one step closer to realising a dream that began when he was just 6-years old, to race open-wheel cars in Europe and eventually compete in Formula 1.
Italian Formula 4 Team Torino Squadra Corse (TSC) has announced that Peroni, from Hobart Tasmania, will be their new star recruit competing in the Italian Formula 4 Championship in 2015. The young Tasmanian is delighted at the opportunity.
Alex Peroni “It’s a dream come true to take part in the internationally competitive Italian F4 championship. F4 is a direct pathway to the top of motor racing and the competition in Europe is pretty intense.
“I did some tests with Torino Squadra Corse in Italy and Spain at the end of last year. The team made me feel very welcome and comfortable and my times showed a lot of promise. I know that it’s going to be a very tough year, my first in car racing, but I wouldn’t be going if I didnt think great results were possible and think with the support of the team we will get stronger as the year goes by”
Alex, who is not yet legally old enough to drive a regular car, will move to Italy to race and will step into the F4 for the first time in March 2015 at the Franciacorta circuit, near Milan.
Previous to his tests in Spain and Italy last year in the Tatuus F4 Abarth of TSC, Peroni raced karts and has impressed with very fast results since beginning in 2007. He has raced in Tasmania, throughout Australia and in Italy, considered the home of world series karting.
The amazing thing is that Peroni who only turned 15 in November, and not eligble to get his Learner plates until next year, excelled in testing and enjoyed travelling at speeds of 220kph on the track alongside other young talents including Michael Schumacher Junior.
Ruggero Cafagna, engineer with Torino Squadra Corse “ We completed a number of tests this winter with Alex. Even though he came to us without ever having driven a car he very quickly settled in and showed great speed and capacity to adapt to the car. I know that Alex has great potential and that he’ll achieve great outcomes for himself and the entire team in 2015.”
Alex will arrive in Italy in early March ready for an intense testing program in readiness for his race debut on the 3rd May at the Vallelunga circuit near Rome, followed by Monza on the 31st May.
Alex has already generated interest from a number of local businesses who are interested to be part of his journey (including DigitalInk and Oceana Fitness), but is hoping that people in Tasmania will get behind him as he begins his journey to what he hopes will take him to the pinnacle of the sport.
